Bill recommended PSA/commercials that have a Chronic Disease focus, particularly on obesity
Alice shared the Dove campaigns that show women before they have been airbrushed in magazines
Governor Christ's Fitness Challenge for Schools: for more info please click on the following Governor's Fitness Challenge this programs offers $10,000 in fitness equipment as a prize
Bill informed the group that a few of the schools are holding fitness days this week in which parents are participating - there is a teacher planning day tomorrow and they will be focusing on employee wellness by having a stress management class /EAP, office exercises and measuring BPs and BMIs, this may help reduce employee absenteeism and will continue once a month
Karen mentioned - the Walk for Wellness Wednesday 3-12-08 will be held on the County Campus from 11:30am to 1:30pm - Marilyn Hamachek won the Platinum Award and only 22 are awarded to the whole County - held a Healthy Heart Cooking Class in February in which 92 people attended -suggested CDS or Amer Diabetic Support Group to do blood sugar testing for the employee wellness day in the future
Sybil distributed information from the Bureau of Chronic Disease and has contact resources for Coalition Members and can distribute any event or health information from members to the listserv
Dr. Matt is moving forward with the student wellness programs with Deb Ogden. They will be talking to health classes with a focus on nutrition. The Palmetto Ridge freshmen class was the first group that he had spoke to. They will continue to offer this health awareness program to schools. He has a Back Pack Safety for elementary school students that he can tailor to an age group.
Alice Mace informed the group about their "Thin to Win" challenge. Different agencies challenge each other and compete to be the "biggest loser." Daily Wellness Tips are distributed This year 40 teams registered and they measure the competitors by holding "weigh-ins" at the beginning and end of the challenge. Sybil encouraged the use of the Health Tips on the HPC website and to refer participants to the health resources on website.
Renee shared the statistic that 40% of the 2-5 yr olds that are in the WIC program are overweight. WIC is offering intervention programs to try and address the issue. The have the Fit Family Class and educate on food labels.
Deb: Asked the group if they are interested in hearing a presentation on Smart Growth and plans on presenting at the next meeting. She needs help getting stakeholders interested and involved. Members agreed that a presentation would be helpful.
