Monthly Active Living Workshop Events

Jennifer Frost discussed "Basketball Under the Stars" a youth activity hosted by the Collier County Sheriff's Office.  Please see the link on the homepage.

June

– Kelly reported in the Youth Fitness challenge for Anni who is running an exchange program for kids.    The event was a great success with many partners from the community chipping in. 160 kids participated. Partners included Noni, a fitness trainer, Starbucks, The Food Service Dept.  and Health who was recognized as a best practice for the partnership.

 July

 – Parks – no particular event will take place for Parks.

August

– Charlotte Thompson – Immunizations. There was a discussion about the active living workshop being more of a way of getting out the word about an event rather than an event. It was decided that the person in charge of the month can run the event in the way that they need to fit their mission.  Charlotte will create a flyer and health tips to be distributed in the community with the intent to increase awareness about getting shots before school starts.

September

– Twyla Leigh – School Food Service – Twyla will create health tips and increase awareness of healthy foods for the month of September. Like Charlotte, she will not be running a particular event but will rely on partners to be information out.

– Bonnie said that September is Senior Health Month and they will be looking to partners to help with events they are planning this month. She also said that she could take October as Senior Health Month. Kelly pointed out that October is the large Child Safety Fair and felt that Sept. could still be Senior and Food Service with October being Safety Month.

October

– Safety – Kelly

November

– Diabetes Sandy Theobald

New Business/Projects

Kelly is looking into a grant that she feels could increase education in schools and in the senior centers. She hopes to report back on the project progress next month but it may cover many of the programs we have discussed in the coalition including the obesity tool kit, resources for the wellness policy in schools, and puppet shows in classrooms.
